Le « Gulf trip » ou croisière du golfe consistait en un parcours de 780 milles autour du golfe de Spencer au sud de l’Australie. Ce parcours, qui deviendra une institution, perdurera jusqu’au début de années 1960, ou la concurrence du rail et de la route mettra fin à une aventure de plus d’un demi-siècle. C’est dans cette histoire que s’inscrit le Moonta-futur Lydia qui reste aujourd’hui le seul survivant des navires qui pratiquaient cette ligne: Le ss Rupara, le ss Paringa, Le mv Minnipa, le mv Moonta et le mv Morialta.
